IS THIS SOMATIC THERAPY?
Somatic Therapy encompasses many modes of working with health, the body and the mind. Yoga, Somatic Movement, Reikhi, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy or Somatic Experiencing, Rosen Bodywork and Feldenkrais are just a few examples of what can be considered “Somatic Therapies”.
Clinical Psychotherapy with a focus on Somatic interventions requires a professional license and the person providing it must be certified and trained in a clinical setting (Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR mindfulness, MBSR, Somatic Experiencing are recognized as evidenced based methods of improving mental health).
Many other somatic modalities require training and a certification, but are not covered by insurance or regulatory boards. In Minnesota, each city provides licensing for Licensed Massage Therapists and requires at least 500 hours of training in a certified program.
At this practice, we separate Psychotherapy from Bodywork to make sure it’s clear what you are getting in our care. In psychotherapy, although there may be facilitated movement, breathing or self-touch, it will never require that you be touched by the clinician or in any form of undress.
